Wireless Club:Sony MDR 1000X vs Sennheiser PXC 550 vs Bose QC 35

When it comes to noise-cancelling headphones The Bose QC35 looked set to dominate the category, but with the launch of the MDR-1000X and the PXC 550, Sony and Sennheiser have shown they’re up to the challenge of producing a pair of headphones that can occupy pride of place in your limited carry-on luggage.

Verdict: Sennheiser tops the list in terms of Sound Quality and Battery Life. Move from the QC 35 to the Sony MDR-1000X and the difference in sound quality is palpable, almost as if the highs and lows were somewhat subdued on the Bose. They’re a whole lot of fun to listen to, full of detail and plentiful bass and that gorgeous wide soundstage, and it’s only when you compare it to the arguably superior Sennheiser that you notice a mildly muddier bass level. In terms of battery, any of these three will last you a trans-Atlantic flight, with Bose and Sony consistently delivering 18 and 20 hours of cable-free noise-cancelled audio, and the Sennheiser doing one better by going up to 25 hours of audio on some charges.

The story is a review of the Sennheiser PXC 550 wireless noise cancellation headphones and how good they are in comparison to Bose and Sony. They are all set to challenge Bose’s QC35. Clad in a tasteful mix of brushed metal, leatherette and matte plastic, the Sennheiser PXC 550 is polished and business like, and the hinges at either end of the headband allow it to twist and collapse down for storage. Twist it back in place, and the headset switches on and is ready to pair over Bluetooth - a nifty feature but one that often leads to the cans being left on and connected to the phone when you don’t want them to. Fortunately, the soft, padded ear cups and padded headband make the PXC 550 comfortable enough to be left on in place even if you nod off. Whereas Bose takes the approach of keeping their headphones slim on features, Sennheiser goes the other way. For instance, you get touch-enabled controls on the right ear cup to adjust volume, skip tracks and play/pause tracks and a quick double-tap switches off the noise cancellation to let external sounds in. You can even pick the level of noise cancellation you prefer based on the ambient noise, and set the headphones to pause the music when you take them off. Sennheiser pleases with its sound quality, with clean audio at both the lows and highs. Even with noise cancellation on, the PXC 550 runs well past the 25-hour mark, beating the Bose battery life by a fair bit. In the verdict, the reviewer states that all things considered, the Sennheiser is his pick of the lot thanks to overall sound quality and battery life.
